Joe Root will be the player to watch out for as England takes on the mighty Australian side in the upcoming Ashes. The Australian players, media, and fans are well aware of the threat he poses, and they are leaving no stone unturned to target him even before the series starts.

Now, Australian pacer Scott Boland has targeted Root as the player to keep quiet in the five-match series. He said that they wouldn't take down the best player and ensure that he has very little impact on the game.

"You always want to take down the best players. In the past when Joe Root has been captain, you want to try to make sure they have as little impact as you can. England has quite a few good batters; we'll be looking to do that too. Hopefully we can keep Joe Root and the guys in the middle order pretty quiet," Boland said, as reported by BCC Sport.

Boland's exceptional record against Root

The last time England toured Australia, Boland dismissed Root on four occasions. He will want to continue his dominance over the English star because if he is quiet, Australia will have a better chance of claiming the Ashes urn once again.

Overall, Boland had a great season in his debut series in the Ashes 2021. In his debut match in Melbourne, he returned the figures of seven runs for six wickets in the second innings and went on to take 18 wickets in three matches at an average of 9.55.

However, he did not have the best run in the next Ashes in England, where he managed just two wickets. Reflecting on that series, he said that he needs to execute his plans a bit better than the last time the two sides played.

"I learned a lot. I've reflected on that tour a fair bit. There will be tweaks to my game plan for what I want to do, but I don't think I need to change too much. I just need to execute a bit better," he added.

Boland was expected to be the backup option in Australia's squad, but in all likelihood, will feature in the first Test in Perth on the 21st of November owing to Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins' injuries.
