The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has handed key responsibilities to former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed. As per reports, the former cricketer will be helming the Pakistan Shaheens and Pakistan Under-19 teams going forward.
While the Pakistan Shaheen team is currently in Doha for the Rising Stars Asia Cup 2025, the Pakistan Under-19 team is currently bracing itself for the upcoming 2026 ICC Under-19 World Cup.
Sarfaraz Ahmed to architect junior Pakistan teams
As reported by Geo News, former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed has been tasked to oversee matters related to Pakistan Shaheens and Pakistan Under-19 teams by the PCB. The 2017 ICC Champions Trophy winning skipper will be required to monitor the performance of coaches of both teams, apart from overseeing their tours. He will also be accompanying the two junior teams during their training sessions and in series.
One of the primary tasks for Sarfaraz Ahmed will be to oversee the progress of the Pakistan Under-19 team as they prepare themselves for the 2026 ICC Under-19 World Cup, scheduled to be hosted by Zimbabwe and Namibia in January and February next year.
It is worth noting that the 38-year-old former cricketer last played for Pakistan back in December 2023 before seemingly confirming his retirement. He represented his nation in 54 Tests, 117 ODIs and 61 T20I matches since his debut in 2007, and was the captain of the Pakistan team that thrashed arch-rivals India to lift the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy in England.
He was also the captain of the Pakistan Under-19 team that won the 2006 Under-19 ICC Cricket World Cup, also by defeating India at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
