In a significant development, India ace Shreyas Iyer has dealt a heavy blow as his fitness clearence from BCCI's Centre of Excellence (CoE) has been delayed by a week. Reports suggest that Iyer was supposed to check out of the CoE on December 30 but will have to wait till January 7 to have his Return to play (RTP) certificate.

A report from Times of India stated that Shreyas Iyer had a rapid drop in his weight, which has also delayed his return to competitive cricket. For the unversed, the right-handed batter was all set to travel to Jaipur to take part in Mumbai's upcoming two Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025 matches  on January 3 and January 6.

However, the plan has now been cancelled as Iyer will now eye to be fit for VHT knock-out games.

Shreyas Iyer unlikely for New Zealand ODIs

Not just Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025, but Iyer is likely to miss the New Zealand ODIs which is set to begin from January 11. The report added that Iyer is likely to attain a clearence to play on January 9, just two days before the New Zealand ODIs.

The upcoming series would have marked Iyer's return to competitive cricket for the first time since his spleen injury during Australia ODIs in October.

Iyer's sudden weight loss concerning for BCCI

Shreyas Iyer was all set for his return, but now he has lost six kilos and lacks the optimal strength required to return to competitive cricket.

"There is no problem with his batting but he lost around six kgs after the injury in Australia. While he has regained lome weight, there has been a drop in muscle mass which has further affected his optimum strength levels. The medical team will not be taking any chances because he is a very important player in the OD| set up and his jomplete recovery is of utmost importance right now. The selectors and management will be conveyed about his present situation before they meet to pick team for New Zealand ODIs," a BCCI official tells Timesoflndia.com.

Now with Iyer unlikely for New Zealand ODIs, he is set for a long delay as India will play a T20 World Cup, which excludes Shreyas.
