In a significant development, India's star batter Shreyas Iyer is all set for a return to competitive cricket for the first time since his fatal on-field injury in Australia. Reports suggest that the right-hand batter has cleared the fitness test at BCCI’s Centre of Excellence and will be part of India’s ODI squad for the upcoming three-match series against New Zealand.

A report from The Times of India stated that Shreyas Iyer was at the BCCI’s CoE recently, and now the medical team has cleared the PBKS captain to take part in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26. Therefore, the 31-year-old will travel to Jaipur on December 30 to join Mumbai squad.

Iyer will take part in the two Vijay Hazare Trophy on January 3 and January 6 before joining the India team as the Men in Blue take on New Zealand from January 11.

"We are hearing positive developments around Shreyas. He is very likely to play two games for Mumbai on January 3 and January 6. The final schedule will depend on clearance from CoE but signs are positive for playing those games in Jaipur. He is batting well in the nets and no discomfort,'" said an MCA official aware of developments.

BCCI yet to announce India's ODI squad for NZ series

Notably, the BCCI is yet to announce India's ODI squad for upcoming New Zealand series. There were reports that the apex board would announce the 15-member list in the first week of January.

Earlier, there were doubts over Shreyas Iyer's participation, but now it seems certain that the right-handed batter will be part of the team. It has been a long time away from the field for Iyer as he has not taken part in any type of cricket since his injury in Australia.
