On September 19, India will take on Bangladesh in the first of two Test match series at the M.A Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. For the upcoming series, the BCCI has named a balanced squad featuring senior members and young guns.

Meanwhile, one of the most noticeable absences from the 16-member list is Shreyas Iyer. The KKR skipper is going through a slump, which is a reason why the selectors have turned their attention away from him. Meanwhile, in the latest events, a BCCI official, speaking to Telegraph India, opined his views on Iyer's dismal form and stated that he is likely to be neglected for the upcoming Australia Test series.

Shreyas Iyer's Struggles In 2024 With Injury And Form

Iyer is having a difficult year as the right hand started 2024 with an injury and was ruled out of the England series. Following this incident, Iyer was even ousted from central contract owing to his reluctance to return to domestic cricket. Since then, the KKR skipper has been trying to make a comeback.

Iyer had the perfect chance to make a strong statement in the Duleep Trophy, but he squandered that opportunity. In the first two rounds of the ongoing tournament, Iyer has scored just 104 runs in four innings. He also registered a duck in one of the innings.

BCCI Official Opines On Shreyas Iyer's Form

Looking at his string of poor performances, there are reports that he might not be considered for the Australian tour scheduled later this year. The BCCI official stated that the doors are shut for Iyer for the upcoming Test series because of his poor shot selection.

“At the moment, there’s no room for Shreyas to be in the Test team. Who will he replace? Besides, his shot selection has been a concern in Duleep, especially yesterday (Sunday). He was well set and suddenly played such a shot (off left-arm spinner Shams Mulani). When you are set and then batting on a flat deck, you need to make the best use of that opportunity,” pointed out a BCCI official, as quoted by the Telegraph.

“Also, with still one round left in Duleep, you never know he might score a hundred. He needs to regain form. Most likely, he won’t go to Australia for his problems against the short ball, but one can’t just ignore his runs at home,” he added.

Iyer still has more chances to prove himself as shine in the upcoming rounds of Duleep Trophy 2024.
