Once the poster boy for Bangladesh’s Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), Shakib Al Hasan now finds himself in hot water for allegedly getting his hands dirty off the field. The same Shakib who once launched the ACC’s anti-corruption hotline and fronted campaigns for clean governance is now being probed for a laundry list of serious corruption charges.

Shakib Al Hasan Named In Probe Over Financial Crimes And Illicit Activities

From being a face on the ACC billboard to possibly ending up in their case files, it’s been one massive fall from grace for Shakib Al Hasan.

On Sunday, ACC Chairman Mohammad Abdul Momen dropped a bombshell. He confirmed that a preliminary investigation is in full swing against the former Bangladesh all-rounder.

"We fear that there may come a point where he becomes the subject of an ACC case," Momen said when asked if Shakib was still officially associated with the Commission.

For now, things are under the scanner. But the writing is on the wall. If even half of the allegations hold water, Shakib could be staring down the barrel of a legal storm.

List Of Charges Against Shakib

Back in August 2023, Supreme Court lawyer Milhanur Rahman Naomi fired the first salvo and requested a formal probe into Shakib’s dealings. And the allegations include:

  • Stock market manipulation
  • Illegal gambling and casino links
  • Gold smuggling
  • Siphoning money from crab traders
  • Corruption within cricket
  • Hiding assets in his election affidavit

Subsequently, the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) froze his bank accounts in November 2023.

From Parliament To Police Radar

Things took a darker turn post the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, 2024. Shakib, who once sat in Parliament, was named as a suspect in the murder of a garment worker named Rubel in Adabor alongside former PM Sheikh Hasina and others.

That case blew the lid off everything. Following his implication, Shakib was dropped from the national squad. A legal notice was sent to the BCB, pushing them to bring the star cricketer back to the country to face the music.

It is worth mentioning that back in 2018, Shakib was appointed the brand ambassador for the ACC. He even helped launch the 106 anti-corruption hotline with much fanfare. But by 2022, the ACC had quietly cut ties as they clearly saw the clouds forming before anyone else did. Now, Shakib’s name is stuck in the mud because of these allegations and his legacy is in tatters.
