The India T20I captaincy saga has been a focal point for a long time now. With Rohit Sharma retiring from the shortest format of the game, it opened the doors for a new leader to be assigned.

However, instead of a straight-forward appointment by the BCCI, the Indian cricket fans witnessed a dragged on saga, which involved Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya and the newly appointed head coach, Gautam Gambhir.

Rohit wanted SKY as his deputy at T20 WC, But.... BCCI had other idea

As per a BCCI Insider, who had a conversation with OneCricket, Rohit Sharma was always in favour of having Suryakumar as his deputy. However, his wish wasn't granted and instead, Hardik was handed the vice-captaincy duties.

Interestingly, Hardik was the one who replaced Rohit as the captain of the Mumbai Indians before the start of IPL 2024 season. Rohit, a 5-time IPL winning skipper was removed in a bizarre decision, and it created a rift between him and Hardik during the IPL season.

However, since Rohit was the T20I captain, he wanted one of his trusted allies to be his deputy, but that didn't happen. Ahead of the Sri Lanka series, it was rumoured that Gambhir, too, wants SKY to lead the Indian T20I team till the 2026 T20 World Cup.

It was widely speculated that Hardik will be the one to succeed Rohit as the new T20I leader, but it seems the coach has a different perspective on it.
