Five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians sent shockwaves across the cricket community yesterday, announcing a significant change in the franchise's leadership.

In an outrageous event, MI appointed all-rounder Hardik Pandya as the captain of the team for the impending 2024 season and beyond.

Hardik Pandya, who was traded last month from Gujarat Titans in an all-cash deal, will now replace Indian veteran batter Rohit Sharma to lead Mumbai Indians in the near future.

Rohit Sharma took charge as MI skipper in 2013, and under his leadership, the franchise witnessed esteemed glory. The team won as many as five titles to equalize CSK's record of the most number of trophies.

For most of his career, Rohit Sharma earned recognition through his elite batting skills. However, the veteran embraced the challenging leadership role with MI and aced it very well.

Fans Enraged With MI's Decision To Move Away From Rohit Sharma

Needless to say, the fans formed a unique connection with Rohit owing to his unparalleled contributions and success with the franchise. Thus, the news of Pandya's appointment over Rohit irked the fans and caused a massive outrage.

Shortly after the announcement, MI's social media handles witnessed a massive dip in follower count. Also, some fans took it a notch higher and burned MI's merchandise jersey and cap.

Even the comment section of the post confirming the transition of power is filled with hate comments directed towards MI and Hardik Pandya.

It's important to note that Rohit Sharma is yet to react to the entire fiasco. He neither put out a statement confirming his decision to step down nor responded to the social media outburst of the fans.

But one thing is certain: the twist in the tale is working against Mumbai Indians. The recent events were nothing but bad PR. The franchise needs to do damage control before the situation goes out of hand. MI is a franchise with an enormous fanbase, and they simply cannot afford to lose support at this stage.
