All is not well in the Indian dressing room as reports circulated that there has been no communication between head coach Gautam Gambhir and senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. The duo of Kohli and Rohit has reportedly avoided talking to Gambhir and has been training separately from the team, which has further intensified the rift.

Team India won a close-fought first ODI against South Africa in Ranchi, and despite the win, several reports mentioned that the BCCI is unhappy with the current dressing room scenario and will host a meeting with Gautam Gambhir and two senior players to discuss the communication gap.

Meeting called-off to discuss RO-KO future

It was earlier stated that in the meeting before the second ODI, the future of Rohit and Kohli will be discussed, as the duo have retired from the other two formats and only play in ODIs.

However, as per TOI journalist, Gaurav Gupta, no such meeting will take place to discuss the future of the legendary duo.

"There is NO such meeting in Raipur, or anywhere else, to discuss any communication issues between the selectors, team management & senior players..or any meeting to discuss the future of senior players, in the near future," Gaurav Gupta stated.

How the rift rumour started between RO-KO and Gambhir?

Gambhir became the head coach of the Indian team in July 2024, following the end of Rahul Dravid’s tenure, and coincidentally, Rohit and Kohli retired from T20Is at the same time. The duo continued to feature in ODIs and Tests under Gambhir, but after back-to-back poor performances against New Zealand and Australia, reports emerged that Gambhir has called for the senior players to play in the Ranji Trophy to prove their worth.

This reportedly didn’t sit well with Rohit and Kohli as they announced their sudden Test retirement in May 2025. The pair made their ODI comeback in the Australian tour, but before that, the chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, mentioned that for future ODI selection, both Rohit and Kohli need to play in the Vijay Hazare trophy, and speculations raised that the team management wanted to sideline the pair from the ODI setup, and hence, the rift rumours started.
