On Saturday, July 19, BCCI president Roger Binny will celebrate his 70th birthday. The former India bowler, who was the leading wicket-taker in the title-winning 1983 World Cup, may have to vacate his post as president due to the BCCI's age-cap rule.
Roger Binny succeeded Sourav Ganguly on October 18, 2022, to become BCCI president. He has led the apex cricket board for nearly three years, but the cricket fans now await a key development on July 19.
What do the BCCI Rules Suggest?
Notably, the BCCI has kept an age cap on the officials working within the board. The age-cap bars the officials from holding any post after turning 70. The issue was raised and brought to the Supreme Court's notice in 2016 after recommendations from the Lodha Committee.
The court cited the example of former BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya, who held the office till the age of 75. Meanwhile, here is the list of BCCI's official guidelines for a person to hold an office in the apex cricket board of India.
(a) Is a citizen of India;
(b) Has not attained 70 years of age;
(c) Has not been declared insolvent or of unsound mind;
(d) Is not a Minister or Government Servant or does not hold a public office;
(e) Does not hold office or post in a sports or athletic association or federation apart from cricket;
(f) Has not been an Office Bearer of the BCCI for a cumulative period of 9 years;
Who Will Succeed Roger Binny?
If Roger Binny vacates the position as BCCI president, then Rajeev Shukla is the leading contender to succeed the 1983 World Cup winner. Notably, Shukla serves as the BCCI vice-president, and the 65-year-old is the most likely candidate to replace Binny as the interim president until the elections later in the year.
Notably, Kushan Sarkar from PTI also mentioned the possibility of Shukla taking over as the interim president and another option being Binny continuing as the president till September, when BCCI host their AGM.
