India wicket keeper-batter Rishabh Pant, who is all set to make a comeback after 14 months, opened up about his harrowing experience during the car crash he suffered in 2022.

In December 2022, Pant survived a terrifying car crash while travelling from Delhi to his hometown Roorkee. The 25-year-old was driving alone when he apparently fell asleep at the wheel, causing his Mercedes to hit a road divider and burst into flames.

Concerned bystanders, including a bus driver, quickly came to his assistance, and he was taken to a hospital in Roorkee before being transferred to Max Hospital in Dehradun for additional medical care.

Pant suffered several injuries, including lacerations on his forehead, a torn ligament in his right knee, and abrasions on his back. The wicketkeeper required surgery to address his injuries.

During a discussion with Times of India, Pant revealed that his prolonged break had affected him both physically and mentally, yet he recognizes the situation could have been more severe.

"When my accident happened I felt something spiritual saved me. With the kind of accident I had, I only got my knee injured, but I can't even imagine how much worse it could have been. Doctors even spoke to me about amputation."

Following an extensive rehabilitation regimen at the National Cricket Academy, Pant worked on recovering from a damaged ligament in his right knee, wrist and ankle injuries, and abrasions to his back.

Expressing his eagerness, Pant stated he had been anxiously awaiting medical clearance and was disheartened to miss out on participating in last year's ODI World Cup on home soil.

"It was very upsetting. We discussed with the NCA team that we will take a shot at the World Cup. All of us tried 200 percent, but my knee couldn't take the load," he said.

Rishabh Pant's return promises to be monumental, given his past reputation as one of India's most explosive batters. Yet, it remains intriguing to see whether he'll take up wicketkeeping duties in the upcoming Indian Premier League 2024.
