Ravichandran Ashwin, the off-spinner for India, delved into the highs and lows of his experience during the Rajkot Test against England, describing how he was left numb upon hearing the news of his mother's illness, just after reaching the landmark of 500 Test wickets.
After being informed by his wife at the end of the second day's play, Ashwin admitted to being overwhelmed with emotion and shared how the unwavering support of his teammates, notably captain Rohit Sharma, and BCCI secretary Jay Shah, ensured his quick departure to be with his ailing mother.
On the third day of the Test match, Ashwin remained off the field but reunited with the team on the fourth day, showing the dedication he has for the beautiful game. He flew to Chennai via a chartered plane arranged by Cheteshwar Pujara, and returned to Rajkot on another chartered plane organised by Jay Shah.
Ashwin also opened up about his sense of helplessness at the team hotel until Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid reached out to him to offer help.
Despite his internal struggle about leaving during the third Test, Ashwin revealed that Rohit's words convinced him to prioritize his family and return home immediately. He also noted Rohit's gesture of arranging for a team physio to accompany him.
Ashwin also acknowledged that the Rajkot Test incident affected his form for the rest of the series. However, he played a crucial role in India's 4-1 Test series victory, claiming 26 scalps to lead the wicket-taking charts in the five-match series.
