Former West Indies player Sir Viv Richards has tipped Shaheen Shah Afridi to top the wicket-takers chart in the upcoming World Cup 2023 in India.

Richards, while interacting with the ICC, praised the Pakistani speedster and called him a determined individual.

Australian quick Mitchell Starc, who has been the highest wicket-taker of the past two World Cup editions, will no longer retain the honours, reckons Sir Viv Richards.

The West Indies legend believes Pakistani speed gun Shaheen Afridi will finish the World Cup 2023 competition as its highest wicket-taker instead.

Richards said that he has noted the speedster’s growth while spending time in Pakistan for PSL seasons. The two-time World Cup-winner stated:

"The leading wicket-taker in the World Cup 2023 will by Shaheen Afridi. Because I have seen him in Pakistan. I spent some time in the PSL. I have seen his massive growth. Highly determined individual."

Afridi is set to helm the Pakistani pace attack once again this tournament. The cricketer was also a cogent force in his side’s success in the past two T20 World Cup editions in Australia and UAE.

As of now, the 23-year-old is gearing up to compete in the 2023 Asia Cup in Pakistan and Sri Lanka. His team will launch its tournament campaign against Nepal on August 30 in Multan. The ‘Men in Green’ will later touch base in Kandy to face arch-rivals India on September 2.
