KL Rahul, the star Indian wicketkeeper batter who made a comeback in the Asia Cup side after a long lay-off due to an injury, has been ruled out of the initial two games.  He will miss the games against Pakistan and Nepal which are scheduled to take place on 2nd of September and 4th of September. The Indian head coach, Rahul Dravid has confirmed the news ahead of the opening game between Pakistan and Nepal in the Asia Cup 2023.

The right-handed batter suffered a hip flexor injury during IPL 2023 and has undergone a surgery as well. However, the news coming up is that KL Rahul has a niggle at the moment and the team management has decided to not risk him for the initial games. Sanju Samson was named as a backup to KL Rahul in the Asia Cup squad by the selectors but Rahul is expected to be fit and ready for the Super 4 stage of the competition.

Recently, KL Rahul was seen doing his batting practice and wicketkeeping drills in Team India’s training session. The current niggle does not seem like an injury that will keep him away from the game for a long time, but if he does get ruled out of the whole Asia Cup, Sanju Samson will take his place.

Along with KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer has also made a comeback to the Indian side after a long time, and he is set to feature in India’s opening game against Pakistan. India will play their second game against Nepal, which will be followed by the Super 4 stage and then the final.

India have named a strong 17-man squad along with Sanju Samson as a backup for the Asia Cup, which will be played in Sri Lanka and Pakistan in a hybrid model. Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna are also making their ODI comeback after a successful Irish tour, and India would be looking to put up a strong performance after the disappointment of the 2022 edition.
