India and Pakistan are set to resume their cricketing rivalry at the upcoming 2023 Asia Cup in Sri Lanka. The two Asian titans will square-off at Kandy’s Pallekele Stadium on September 2, which will serve as India’s opening match and Pakistan’s Group A conclusion of the tournament.

Ahead of the much-awaited contest, here at OneCricket we look back at one of the classic India vs Pakistan shootouts at an Asia Cup event.

Throwback to Hardik Pandya’s all-round show against Pakistan

Much like the upcoming Asia Cup 2023, both India and Pakistan also squared-off in the earlier stages of the 2022 competition. After Indian captain Rohit Sharma opted to field first, Pakistan batters were made to crawl their way to a modest 147-run total upfront.

In response, the ‘Men in Blue’ were jolted early with cheap dismissals of both their openers, Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul. Thereafter, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja steadied ship with crafty 35s before Hardik Pandya stepped into the crease.

At the time of the all-rounder’s arrival, India required another 59 runs to win off five-and-a-half overs. Pandya kept calm and produced a tense 33* from just 17 deliveries, and thumped four boundaries and a match-winning six in the final over against Mohammad Nawaz.

Remarkably, the white-ball veteran also claimed three wickets earlier in the game, all while conceding just 25 runs off his four overs.

Pandya will now take field once again against India’s arch-rivals in their opening Asia Cup 2023 bout. The two sides can potentially face each other one more time during the Super Four stage of the tournament.

The rivalry will continue when Rohit Sharma’s troops will host Pakistan on October 14 in their World Cup 2023 fixture at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium.
