Only two days ago, the cricketing world had witnessed Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Mustafizur Rahman weave magic in Mirpur.

The duo had dragged their side from the depths of defeat to an enthralling one-wicket victory by stitching a 51-run partnership for the last wicket in the first ODI of India’s tour to Bangladesh in 2022.

And, the same venue was set alight once more as Mehidy rose to the occasion in the second ODI as he exhibited brilliance when his team found itself at a dismal 69/6.

Making his mark with his maiden ODI century, Mehidy, alongside the seasoned Mahmudullah, stitched together a remarkable 148-run partnership for the seventh wicket. The initial phase of their partnership saw the duo bide their time, allowing the Indian bowlers to stay in the driving seat. But with Mehidy at the helm, the tables were about to turn.

Targetting the Indian spinners, Mehidy's powerful leg-side strokes sent the ball flying over the boundary ropes, much to the delight of the roaring crowd. His journey to the three-figure mark was nothing short of spectacular.

The dismissal of Mahmudullah saw Mehidy shift gears. What followed was sheer genius – from a steady 66 off 71 balls, Mehidy sprinted to his century in just the next 12 balls, marking only the second instance of a player batting at No.8 or lower achieving this feat in ODIs. His glorious 83-ball hundred was laced with eight boundaries and four maximums.

In response, the Indian innings was marred by early setbacks as they stumbled to 65/4. While fifties from Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul provided some respite, their quick departures sent tremors through the batting line-up.

An injured Rohit Sharma, batting at an unusual No.9, displayed his class, scoring 51 runs off 28 balls in a brave attempt to chase the target.

But destiny had other plans. Falling just short of the finishing line, India ended at 266/9. With this, Bangladesh sealed the series 2-0 and it was largely due to the heroic efforts of one man – Mehidy Hasan Miraz.
