In a heartbreaking development, an Umpire was stabbed to death on Sunday (April 02) during a cricket tournament in Manhisalanda village in Cuttack district.

According to reports published in Orissa dailies, two teams' namely, Brahmpur and Sankarpur- were locking horns in one of the fixtures of a cricket tournament in Mahisalanda Panchayat under Choudwar Police Station, when a scuffle broke out when the deceased youth- a 22-year-old umpire called Lucky Raut- gave a wrong decision against a player from Brahmpur.

This led to a heated argument after a member from the same village- identified as Smruti Ranjan- questioned the on-field call from the official.

Local police have arrested the 'accused' amid escalating tension in the district

The scuffle took a very ugly turn as Smruti Ranjan proceeded to stab the umpire with a sharp knife, leaving the latter critically injured.

The match official was immediately rushed to a nearby SCB Medical College, where the doctors, unfortunately, declared him dead.

The incident has set the tension soaring in the entire village, and while the police have identified and napped the accused, a whole host of police sources has been deployed in the district.
