In an exciting start to the first Test match between Australia and West Indies at Kensington Oval, Barbados, Australia captain Pat Cummins scripted history by becoming the captain with the second-highest number of wickets in Test cricket history. This momentous milestone came on Thursday, June 26, during Day 2 of the match.
The 31-year-old pacer first dismissed Keacy Carty late on Day 1, equaling the legendary Richie Benaud’s tally of 138 wickets as a Test captain for Australia. On Day 2, he went one step further by sending Roston Chase, the West Indies captain, back to the pavilion.
That wicket made Cummins the second-highest wicket-taking captain in Test cricket history with 139 wickets, overtaking Benaud and placing him just behind Pakistan great Imran Khan, who holds the top spot with 187 wickets. Here’s a look at the top 5:
Most Wickets By Captain In Test Cricket History
- Imran Khan (PAK) – 187 wickets
- Pat Cummins (AUS) – 139 wickets
- Richie Benaud (AUS) – 138 wickets
- Gary Sobers (WI) – 117 wickets
- Daniel Vettori (NZ) – 116 wickets
Cummins also now shares the record for second-most five-wicket hauls as a captain (9), just one behind Imran Khan (10).
Since taking over the Test captaincy in 2021, Cummins has led Australia in 28 Tests, guiding them to the 2023 World Test Championship title and into the 2025 final. His leadership, combined with his incredible bowling, has made him one of the most successful Test captains in modern cricket.
Bowling Dominates In Barbados In First Test
The pitch at Kensington Oval has heavily favoured bowlers so far. The West Indies were bowled out for 190 runs in their first innings, and Australia, in their second innings, had a rough start. At stumps on Day 2, the Aussies were 92 for 4, leading by just 82 runs. Batters Travis Head (13)* and Beau Webster (19)* are at the crease, trying to stabilise the innings.
Australia’s top order struggled, with Usman Khawaja, Sam Constas, Cameron Green, and Josh Inglis all falling cheaply. The Test match now hangs in the balance, with each side looking to dominate on Day 3.
