Jasprit Bumrah is often seen as one of the best fast bowlers India has ever produced. And now, none other than former star spinner R Ashwin has openly declared his deep admiration for him.
In a recent chat on his YouTube channel, Ashwin didn’t hold back in praising Bumrah’s brilliance, both as a bowler and as a match-winner.
"I have praised him a lot. But the word you said will not come out of my mouth. But the point is, he is fabulous. That’s all I want to leave. He was born in this world. All these things become a soap opera. I am not one of those drama artists. I don’t want to market anyone. But he is a fabulous cricketer,” Ashwin said.
Ashwin believes that Bumrah’s impact on Indian cricket is huge and that he deserves to be spoken of in the same breath as legends like Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli.
“I really wish that we go that route (In giving Bumrah the same respect as Tendulkar and Kohli). I am still saying that as much as we do for Rohit Sharma, or Virat Kohli, or Sachin Tendulkar, we don’t do the same for Jassi. Definitely more than what a bowler usually has. He’s got a lot of respect. He’s got a lot of fans. A lot of people love him. I am his number one fan. Maybe his wife could be number one, competing for it. I am his number one fan,” Ashwin further added.
R Ashwin Breaks Down Jasprit Bumrah’s Brilliance
Ashwin also gave fans a glimpse into what makes Bumrah so tough to face. He broke down how Bumrah troubled England’s top batter Joe Root during the first Test. According to Ashwin, Bumrah’s bowling is not just about his unusual action, but how he executes it with precision.
“He is on a different pedestal. He is in a different world. And the problem is, it’s not about the uniqueness of his action. It is about the quality of execution. How does he execute? The way he troubled Joe Root in the first innings, proper. Joe Root was not able to pick the length. The ball was a little far. He could have played the rest of the bowlers in the backfoot, would have tapped it to third man. But not to Bumrah,” Ashwin said.
While Bumrah did shine in the first innings by taking five wickets, his efforts weren’t enough to save India in the first Test match against England at Headingley. After setting a target of 371, India lost by five wickets, as England chased it down comfortably on Day 5.
Bumrah, who bowled 44 overs in the match, second-most after Ravindra Jadeja, was unable to pick up a wicket in the second innings and was seen leaving the field multiple times, raising concerns about his fitness.
Jasprit Bumrah Likely To Miss Second Test
It is important to note that India's head coach, Gautam Gambhir, had earlier stated that Bumrah would not play all five Tests due to workload management. However, there is a high chance that Bumrah will miss the second Test at Edgbaston starting July 2, which could be a major setback for India, especially as they trail the series 0-1.
