England experienced cricketer Heather Knight is staying positive about making a comeback in time for the 50-over Women’s World Cup later this year as she recovers from a serious hamstring injury. The 33-year-old suffered a painful injury during the recent T20I series against the West Indies and has since been on the sidelines.
Heather Knight Aims for World Cup Return
In a statement to the PA news agency, Knight shared,
“That World Cup is what I’m aiming for, it’s what I’ve got my sights set on.”
“There’s always bumps in the road with rehab but hopefully everything goes smoothly and I can be back early September and get a bit of cricket in before the World Cup," she said.
The injury occurred during the first match of the three-game T20I series against West Indies Women. Knight played a fantastic unbeaten knock of 66 runs but was unable to take the field in the second innings due to the injury. As a result, she missed the rest of the series, as well as the ODI leg and the entire summer season, including The Hundred.
Knight spent two weeks on crutches and opted not to undergo surgery. Instead, she chose a conservative treatment method, focusing on rest and physiotherapy.
“Things are tracking pretty well to hopefully be fit for that (World Cup). It’s healing well. We’re not gonna rush things. It’s a pretty gnarly injury: I ripped off the tendon quite well from the bone, so I have to be a little bit careful coming back," Knight added.
Knight’s recovery journey comes during a turning point in her career. Earlier this year, she stepped down as England’s captain following a tough Ashes series in Australia, ending her nine-year tenure. Nat Sciver-Brunt has since taken over the captaincy.
Heather Knight Looking Ahead With Positivity
Despite the hurdles, Heather Knight remains driven and passionate about representing England again. “I’m still very motivated to keep playing for England,” she said.
With her eyes set on the World Cup, ECB is hopeful to see the seasoned batter back in action soon, bringing her experience and grit to the England team.
