Ravichandran Ashwin, who celebrated his 100th Test appearance with a match-winning nine-wicket haul against England, rose to number one spot on the latest ICC Test rankings for bowlers.

The legendary off-spinner displaced teammate Jasprit Bumrah from the top of the rankings, with the latter now finding himself firmly placed at number three.

Australian pace maverick Josh Hazlewood also soared past Bumrah through his latest match-winning spell against New Zealand at Christchurch.

Ravi Ashwin claims number 1 ICC ranking

Ashwin has claimed the number one spot on the ICC Test rankings for bowlers for the sixth occasion in his career, this time by displacing Jasprit Bumrah from the premier position.

The 37-year-old recently harvested 26 English wickets across 10 innings, which included a Test-winning nine-wicket haul in the final match of the series in Dharamshala.

Jasprit Bumrah, who rose to number one ranking back in February owing to his nine-fer in Vizag, has now slipped to number three on the list. The seasoned Indian speedster managed to claim just four wickets across four innings in his subsequent two appearances at Rajkot and Dharamshala respectively.

South Africa’s pace merchant Kagiso Rabada also lost a rung owing to his extensive stay away from Test cricket, largely influenced by this year’s SA20 2024 season.

Australian fast bowler Josh Hazlewood, meanwhile, reaped the benefits of Bumrah’s silent run and Rabada’s absence to climb to number two on the rankings. The 33-year-old cricketer orchestrated a remarkable Australian win at Christchurch through his six-wicket match haul to finish his two-Test tally with 10 scalps against New Zealand.

Hazlewood’s teammates Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon retained their number five and number six rankings respectively, alongside Indian tweaker Ravindra Jadeja (at seven) and Sri Lanka’s Prabath Jayasuriya (at eight).

England’s pace warhorse James Anderson, despite claiming just 10 wickets across four Tests in India, also managed to retain his ninth spot. Shaheen Afridi toppled New Zealand’s Kyle Jamieson to jump back into the top 10, considering the latter was ruled out of the Test series against Australia.

Ravichandran Ashwin’s spin mate Kuldeep Yadav perhaps turned out to be the biggest benefactor of ICC’s latest ranking shuffle. The 29-year-old jumped 15 places to secure the 16th position, thus finding himself as the next highest ranking Indian bowler after Ashwin and Bumrah after series heroics against England.
