Punjab Kings thumped Mumbai Indians in the second qualifier to set a date with RCB in the final of the IPL 2025 season. England pipped West Indies in the second ODI to take a 2-0 lead in the series. In other news, Joe Root attained a huge batting record for England in ODIs.

Shreyas Iyer Fires Punjab Into IPL 2025 Final

Punjab Kings stormed into the finals of IPL 2025 by outclassing Mumbai Indians by five wickets with an over to spare in the second qualifier at Ahmedabad. Mumbai Indians batted first and hauled 203-6 from 20 overs courtesy of explosive 40s from Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav. For Punjab, Azmatullah Omarzai unfurled the spell of the high-scoring innings with figures of 2-43.

Chasing 204, Josh Inglis took down Jasprit Bumrah with his fiery 21-ball 38 before falling to Hardik Pandya. Nehal Wadhera clattered 48 runs off 29 balls while captain Shreyas Iyer rained down an unbeaten 87 off 41 with five fours and eight huge sixes. Iyer’s run-chase masterclass orchestrated Mumbai Indians’ first-ever defeat in IPL history after posting a total in excess of 200.

England Pull Off Big Chase To Seal Series Vs WI

England outclassed West Indies by three wickets in the penultimate over of the second ODI to seal their three-match series by a game to spare. West Indies batted first and racked up 308 runs, with number three Keacy Carty top-scoring with 103 runs at a near run-a-ball. Brandon King and captain Shai Hope also punched out sizzling half-centuries in the innings. For England, Adil Rashid (4-63) and Saqib Mahmood (3-37) picked up seven wickets between them.

Chasing 309, England lost both openers for ducks to Jayden Seales and Matthew Forde before Joe Root anchored the pursuit with an epic 166* off 139 balls. Captain Harry Brook and Will Jacks also smeared quick 40s to counter Alzarri Joseph’s four-fer as England took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series.

Joe Root Becomes England’s Greatest ODI Batter

Joe Root surpassed former cricketer and 2019 World Cup winning captain Eoin Morgan to become England’s greatest batter in ODI history. The legendary right-hander plundered his 18th ODI century in the second match of the series against West Indies in Cardiff, and in doing so, completed 7,000 runs in the process to become England’s highest run-aggregator in the format.

His ODI tally currently stands just above 7,000 runs from 168 innings at a prolific batting average of above 49 and with a strike rate of nearly 88.

Mukesh Kumar Fights Back For India A But ENG Inch Closer

England Lions inched closer to India A’s total of 557 by reaching 527-7 by stumps on Day 3. Opening batter Tom Haines towered over the visitors with a huge 171 from 279 balls in Canterbury. Max Holden and Dan Mousley also plundered identical hundreds to trouble Indian bowlers throughout the day.

Mukesh Kumar sparked India’s fightback during the middle stages of the day with three quick wickets, which included the prized scalps of centurion Max Holden and home captain James Rew.

MPL 2025 To Begin On June 4 In Pune

The Maharashtra Men’s Premier League (MPL) and the Women’s Maharashtra Premier League (WMPL) will both commence from June 4 onwards at the MCA Stadium in Pune. As many as six teams will compete in the men’s edition, including defending champions Ratnagiri Jets. The women’s event will be played between four teams, namely Pune Warriors, Ratnagiri Jets, Solapur Smashers, and Raigad Royals.
