Karun Nair completed a splendid double century against England Lions on Day 2 of the four-day match in Canterbury. In a fresh blow to Bangladesh, fast bowler Shoriful Islam has been ruled out of the impending third T20I against Pakistan. In other news, Afghanistan-based Hindukush Strikers mounted over 800 runs against Pamir Legends in match 9 of the Ahmad Shah Abdali 4-day Tournament 2025 season.
Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Saturday, May 31.
Karun Nair Strengthens Claim For ENG Tests With Double Ton
Karun Nair, unbeaten on 186* at the end of Day 1, brought up his double century the following morning against England Lions at St Lawrence Ground in Canterbury. The cricketer faced 281 deliveries in the process, and dispatched 26 of them for boundaries and another for a six. He was eventually dismissed by Zaman Akhter, as India A mounted 557 from 125.1 overs.
Notably, Nair also strengthened his claim as the cricketer braces himself for his Test return in the impending series against England.
Bangladesh Drops To 10th Place In T20I Rankings
The Bangladesh cricket team slipped to tenth position on the latest ICC men’s rankings for T20Is. Bangladesh recently slipped to big defeats against Pakistan in Lahore to concede their three-match series with a game to spare. Earlier this month, Bangladesh also lost successive T20Is to UAE to lose the series 1-2 despite taking an early lead.
As of now, the Bangladesh team is holding 220 rating points to be ranked tenth on the ICC rankings, finding themselves behind ninth-placed Afghanistan.
Shoriful Islam Ruled Out Of Third T20I Vs PAK
Bangladesh fast bowler Shoriful Islam has been ruled out of the team for the impending third T20I match against Pakistan. The speedster injured his right thigh muscle in the previous match in Lahore, prompting him out of the field within his opening over itself. The MRI scans revealed that Islam has a Grade 1 strain in the rectus femoris muscle on his right side. The BCB medical team confirmed that the 24-year-old will not be able to play cricket for another two to three weeks.
Cheteshwar Pujara Ready For A Test Comeback
Indian batting barnacle Cheteshwar Pujara is “ready” to make his return to Test cricket for the national team. The 37-year-old played the last of his 103 Tests for India back in June 2023 against Australia at The Oval.
Pujara said that while he does not know if the Indian team wants him back or not, he will be more than happy to be a part of the group once again. It is worth noting that Pujara’s possible return became a brief topic of discussion earlier in May after the sudden retirements of fellow senior pros Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
Hashmatullah’s Hindukush Strikers Amass 811-9d
Hindukush Strikers hauled 811-9d against Pamir Legends in match 9 of the Ahmad Shah Abdali 4-day Tournament 2025 season to record the seventh highest first-class total this 21st century. Moreover, Hindukush Strikers’ run riot also marked the 28th highest first-class team total of all time in history.
Each of the top four batters, including both openers Hassan Eisakhil and Noor ul Rahman, senior number three Hashmatullah Shahidi as well as captain Mohammad Asif plundered big centuries at the Najibullah Tarakai Cricket Ground.
