In recent news, former Australia head coach Darren Lehmann disclosed that Phillip Hughes was on the brink of a Test recall shortly before the tragic accident that claimed his life took place. As the cricket world approaches the tenth anniversary of Hughes' passing, Lehmann shared the painful memory of how the young left-hander was set to return to the Australian Test team before fate intervened.
On November 25, 2014,the date that Australian and the cricket fans will never forget. Phillip Hughes was batting for South Australia in a Sheffield Shield match when he was struck on the neck by a bouncer.
The freak accident resulted in a rare vertebral artery dissection, leading to a fatal cerebral haemorrhage. Hughes tragically succumbed to his injuries on November 27, just three days before his 26th birthday.
Darren Lehmann Reveals Memories With Phillip Hughes
In a special report by Code Sports, Lehmann revealed that the Australian team management had finalised their plans to recall Hughes for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India before the shocking incident occured . It is worth mentioning that, he was out of the Test side for nearly 18 months but was finally decided to be included in the team to make a comeback.
“Yeah, we’d had a meeting, already. That was all done and we were about to tell Bucky Rogers he was going to make way out of the team. Then obviously we had to put everything on hold. I was in the office (next to Allan Border Field) and they said Phil’s been hit. When we saw the video of that and he’s gone straight to hospital, I literally flew straight down. I just left work with just my tracksuit and that was it. I had to buy clothes when I got down there and work it all out,” Lehmann said.
Michael Clarke Recalls Phillip Hughes Death
Hughes’ then captain Michael Clarke said that after Phillip Hughes passed away it impacted his life to a great extent. He said that it was the worst day as he lost not just his teammate but a close-friend.
“Losing Phillip at such a young age is a big part of my life. I cherish my life a lot more now than I ever did. I enjoy my journey a lot more now than I ever did as a youngster,” Clarke told Code Sports.
