Krunal Pandya was a hot name in the 2018 IPL auction. MI had already seen his skills and were determined not to let him go. When Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) placed a big bid of ₹ 8.8 crore, MI decided to use their Right to Match (RTM) card to bring Krunal back. This decision by MI made the southpaw the highest-paid uncapped player in IPL history at the time.

Krunal had already shown his value to MI. He was a solid performer in domestic cricket and had made his mark in the IPL too. In the 2017 IPL final, he even bagged the Man of the Match award, helping MI grab the trophy. MI’s decision to pay big bucks to keep him made sense; Krunal was a solid all-rounder and a key part of their squad.

But after a few successful seasons with MI, Krunal was released and later picked up by Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the 2022 mega auction. He was with LSG for three seasons before they decided to let him go ahead of the IPL 2025 auction.

In the 2022 auction, Ishan Kishan grabbed all the headlines. MI went all guns blazing to get him back, spending a whopping ₹ 15.25 crore. This made him the second-most expensive Indian player ever bought at an IPL auction.

Known for his explosive batting, Ishan didn’t disappoint the MI management. In 2022, he scored 418 runs, followed by 454 runs in 2023, and 320 in 2024. His attacking play at the top of the order made him a valuable asset for MI.

Ishan had been part of the MI setup before, and the franchise showed their trust in him by buying him back for such a high price. However, ahead of the IPL 2025 auction, MI released him.

Cameron Green takes the top spot as MI’s most expensive auction buy ever with a staggering ₹ 17.5 crore in 2023. The young Australian all-rounder came with big expectations, and he lived up to them.

In his debut season with MI, Green scored 452 runs with an average of 50.22 and a massive strike rate of 160.28. He smashed two half-centuries and even scored a hundred. Moreover, he contributed with the ball as well and took six wickets over the season.

But, despite an incredibly successful season, MI decided to trade him to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) ahead of IPL 2024. It was a brief stint for Green with MI, and fans saw Green’s brilliance in those games. Although his time with MI ended, he is one of their most exciting and expensive purchases ever.
