On Tuesday, June 17, RevSportz confirmed that the Pataudi Trophy, contested between India and England, will officially be rebranded as the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy on June 19 in a private ceremony following the recent tragedy in Ahmedabad.
At the request of Sachin Tendulkar, Pataudi’s legacy will also remain alive through a special medallion ceremony held after the series. However, the move has sparked controversy, with many cricket fans expressing disappointment over the discontinuation of the Pataudi Trophy.
While both the ECB and BCCI face heavy criticism, this article explores the names and significance of all the major series India plays with other cricketing nations.
1. Border-Gavaskar Trophy (India and Australia)
The India-Australia series is named the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, honouring Allan Border and Sunil Gavaskar—two legends of red-ball cricket. First contested in 1996, 17 series have been played so far under this banner.
So far, India have won 10 times, while Australia tasted success on just 6 occasions.
2. Freedom Trophy (India and South Africa)
The India-South Africa series is known as the Freedom Trophy, celebrating the freedom fighters of both nations. Mahatma Gandhi played a pivotal role in India’s independence in 1947, while Nelson Mandela was central to South Africa’s anti-apartheid movement and served as the Rainbow Nation’s first president.
The first series began in 2015, and so far, India and South Africa have played five series, with each team winning twice.
3. Pataudi Trophy and Anthony de Mello Trophy (India and England)
Pataudi Trophy:
This trophy is awarded when India tours England. The first series under this name took place in 2007 and was won by India. The trophy honours the legacy of the Pataudi family, particularly Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, who played for both Sussex and India and became the youngest-ever Test captain for a subcontinental team.
Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy:
Following the recent rebranding, the trophy will now honour the legacies of James Anderson and Sachin Tendulkar, while the medallion ceremony will keep the Pataudi name alive.
Anthony de Mello Trophy:
This trophy is awarded for series between India and England held in India. It was first presented in 1951 and honours Anthony de Mello, one of the founders of the BCCI. De Mello, a former Indian cricket administrator, was also a founding member of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and played a key role in establishing the Asian Games.
