Pakistan's former head coach and the current director of PCB's high-performance centre, Aaqib Javed, has revealed that the door is still open for Babar Azam to make a comeback into the T20I team. The ace batter hasn't been active in the shortest format for quite a while now, having played his final T20I back in December last year.
Babar Azam Can Still Make T20I Comeback, Says Javed
Hailed for his scintillating stroke play, Babar Azam had to be dropped from Pakistan's T20I squad following his inconsistent returns in the format. The stylish right-handed batter earned massive backlash for his sub-par scoring rate, eventually being replaced by the dynamic Mohammad Haris in the setup.
Meanwhile, Aaqib Javed, who recently switched his role from the head coach to the director of PCB's high performance centre, believes that Babar can still make his T20I comeback, provided he uplifts his game.
Speaking to the media, the former fast bowler revealed that the senior players like Babar, Shaheen and Rizwan can return to Pakistan's T20I team if they adapt to the demands of modern-day cricket and fine-tune their respective games.
“Whether it’s Babar or any other player, the game is open to everyone. If Babar or anyone else performs well, they will earn their place—anyone can rise through performance. Players are aware of which format they best fit into. There are numerous challenges ahead, and they must be prepared to face them,” Aaqib Javed was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.
Babar, Shaheen and Rizwan formed a match-winning trio for Pakistan before their unimpressive returns prompted the PCB to axe them from the format. Talking about Babar, the Lahore-born cricketer has amassed 4223 runs in 121 T20I innings at a superb average of 39.83 and a strike rate of 129.22.
However, his inconsistency and poor strike rate played a pivotal role in his exclusion, with flamboyant stroke-makers like Haris and Hasan Nawaz making it into Pakistan's T20I team.
