During the 2023 Ashes tournament, a highly controversial incident occurred while England was batting at 193-5, chasing a target of 371 on the fifth day of the Test match.

Australia's wicketkeeper, Alex Carey, executed an underarm throw at the stumps as Bairstow came out of his crease at the end of an over. Australian team appealed and Bairstow was given out.

Following the incident, the Australian team faced heavy criticism, particularly directed towards wicketkeeper Carey.

He became the target of cyberbullying, which took a toll on his mental well-being and subsequently affected his form, as stated by several Australian players.

Cummins asked Carey to throw

Pat Cummins, who led the SRH team to the playoffs, recently addressed his involvement in the controversial wicket incident.

He discussed the matter in the latest season of "The Test," a documentary series offering insights into the Australian men’s cricket team. The series is set to premiere on May 24 on Amazon Prime.

“Cam Green was bowling and bowled a bouncer and he [Bairstow] ducked underneath it and then just walked out of his crease. So I just said to Kez [Carey] the ball before, I said ‘Kez, just have a throw" - Pat Cummins said.

Despite Cummins being the mastermind behind the plan, it was Carey who faced the brunt of the backlash and criticism.

“Walking back into the Long Room, it was like we’d ripped the soul of out them. Absolutely, yeah, people stepped over the line” - Cummins added.

Despite Ben Stokes' heroic innings of 155, England lost that Test match and Australia took a 2-0 lead in the series.

However, England managed to stage a comeback and levelled the series to 2-2.
