In a surprising move, Glenn Maxwell is set to play 50-over cricket again, just months after officially retiring from ODIs. The 36-year-old all-rounder has been included in Victoria’s squad for their first two matches of the Dean Jones Trophy against Queensland and Tasmania at Allan Border Field this week.

Maxwell officially retired from ODI cricket in June 2025. After his debut in 2012, he played 149 ODIs, scoring 3,990 runs and claiming 77 wickets. A two-time World Cup winner in 2015 and 2023, his final ODI came earlier this year against India in the Champions Trophy.

Glenn Maxwell To Feature in Dean Jones Trophy

Just months after ODI retirement, Glenn Maxwell made himself available for the 50-over format as Victoria named him in their squad for the Dean Jones Trophy. However, he will feature in just 2 games.

Maxwell, who has played only one List A game for Victoria since March 2022, is using the matches as preparation for Australia’s upcoming T20I tour of New Zealand. His return gives Victoria both experience and star power as they begin the new season.

Joining him in the squad is Matt Short, who is also making a return after a side injury that ruled him out of the West Indies and South Africa series earlier this year. Like Maxwell, Short has not featured in a 50-over match since the Champions Trophy but is seen as a key player for Australia’s white-ball future.

Captain Will Sutherland will only play in the first game before heading to India for the Australia A tour. Veteran batter Peter Handscomb will take over the captaincy for game two.

Victoria squad for Dean Jones Trophy:

Will Sutherland, Peter Handscomb, Blake Macdonald, Callum Stow, Cam McClure, David Moody, Glenn Maxwell, Harry Dixon, Marcus Harris, Matt Short, Mitch Perry, Sam Elliott, Sam Harper, Tom Rogers

Maxwell’s Recent Form

After retiring from ODIs, Glenn Maxwell shifted his focus to T20Is. In his last 5 T20I appearances, he has scored 62*, 16, 1, 0 and 47. Besides, he also picked up 4 wickets in 3 games combined.

Hence, his recent form has been decent, and in domestic cricket, he can further refine his rhythm ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup.
