India’s vice-captain, Shubman Gill, gave fans a heartwarming moment amidst the Asia Cup 2025. Gill was recently spotted hanging out and giving batting suggestions to Hong Kong cricketers, offering them tips and encouraging them after their forgettable match against Afghanistan.
Hong Kong had managed only 94/9 in their opening match while chasing 189, leaving their batters visibly low on confidence. But Gill, who is mostly calm and composed in nature both on and off the field, took out time to guide the young players.
Shubman Gill Advises Hong Kong Players To Switch Off Their Brains
In a video that went viral on social media, Shubman Gill can be seen telling Hong Kong’s batters to avoid overthinking while batting. He said practice is more important to master any art, and once the rhythm forms, the overthinking slowly disappears.
The Hong Kong players, meanwhile, listened intently, clearly inspired by words coming from one of world cricket’s most stylish young batters. Gill's advice was uncomplicated and direct, using gut instinct rather than overthinking, which he has continually presented with his own batting.
“Practice a lot. The more you practice the more you will create muscle memory, and the less you have to think about the shot. Let the body take over, the more you think, the more it will affect. Think about it as less as possible. You… reach the zone when you think less. It (the ball) is just coming to you, and you are reacting,” Gill said.
This interaction not only embodies a confidence boost for Hong Kong but also reflects Gill's sportsman spirit and humility.
Contrasting Tale Of Sportsmanship Witnessed In Asia Cup
While Shubman Gill was extremely warm with Hong Kong players, the Indian team’s demeanour against Pakistan in their Asia Cup match was hostile. They refused to shake hands before and after the match as a gesture of solidarity to the armed forces.
Captain Suryakumar Yadav clarified that some things are above sportsmanship, and given the strained relationship between India and Pakistan after the Pahalgam terrorist attack, refusing to engage with Pakistani players felt like the right call.
