Australia swashbuckling batter Glenn Maxwell has shocked the world by announcing his immediate retirement from ODI cricket. The 36-year-old says he wants to focus only on T20 matches from now on.
Glenn Maxwell Retires From ODIs
Maxwell had an impressive ODI career, playing 149 matches and scoring 3,990 runs. He helped Australia win two World Cups during his time. However, he will still be available to play in international T20 matches and also plans to continue his career in T20 leagues around the world.
In an interview on the Final Word podcast, Maxwell said he had already decided to retire from ODIs before a recent finger injury kept him out of the Indian Premier League (IPL). He mentioned that it’s time for younger players to step up and prepare for the 2027 World Cup.
"I said to him right then and there, 'I don't think I'm going to make that',"the two-time ODI World Cup winner said.
"I think it's time to start planning for people in my position, to have a crack at it and try and make that spot their own for the for the 2027 World Cup. Hopefully they get enough of a lead-in where they can have success in that role," Maxi added.
Glenn Maxwell's Memorable ODI Performances
Maxwell made his ODI debut back in 2012 and became known for his explosive batting style. One of his most unforgettable performances was during the 2023 World Cup in India, where he scored a heroic double-century against Afghanistan despite suffering from cramps and injuries during the match. That innings is considered one of the greatest in Australian cricket history.
Looking ahead, Maxwell is expected to continue shining in T20 matches, especially with the 2026 T20 World Cup set to take place in India and Sri Lanka.
