New Zealand and Team India both stormed into the semifinals of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy after the former secured a comfortable win over Bangladesh. In India, UP Warriorz and RCB slugged it out in the first-ever Super Over in the history of WPL. Furthermore, the England team management has now faced another injury setback, this time in the form of Brydon Carse.
Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Monday, February 24.
New Zealand Wallop Bangladesh, Qualify For Semifinals
New Zealand upstaged Bangladesh by five wickets and 23 balls to spare in match number six of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy at the Rawalpindi Stadium. The outcome also ensured that the New Zealand cricket team, as well as fellow unbeaten Team India qualified for the semifinals of the tournament.
New Zealand spinner Michael Bracewell picked up four wickets for just 26 runs, while fast bowler William O’Rourke chipped in with two to restrict Bangladesh to 236-9 from 50 overs. In response, the ‘Black Caps’ slipped to 15-2 but a regal century from Rachin Ravindra, and a calculated half-century from wicketkeeper-batter Tom Latham ensured New Zealand sealed the chase in 46.1 overs.
Rachin Ravindra Attacked By Militant-Backed Party Supporter In CT 2025
New Zealand batter Rachin Ravindra, during the course of his match-winning century, was ambushed by an intruder at the Rawalpindi Stadium. According to AP, the intruder was a supporter of Tehreek-e-Labaik Pakistan (TLP), an Islamist party banned by the Pakistani government back in 2021.
The intruder in question hugged Ravindra and displayed the picture of TLP leader Saad Rizvi. The incident occurred on the same day when reports emerged of a possible terrorist attack to thwart Pakistan’s 2025 ICC Champions Trophy hosting party.
Brydon Carse Ruled Out Of CT 2025 Due To Injury
England fast bowler Brydon Carse has been ruled out of the remainder of the ongoing 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. The speedster also did not attend England’s training session on Monday. The 29-year-old has a painful blister on his left foot, which also troubled him during England’s recently-concluded away ODI series against Team India.
Brydon Carse bowled just seven overs against Australia, leaking 69 runs at an expense of just one wicket. England will now face Afghanistan in their next Group B match on February 26.
Wasim Akram Calls For Major Changes After PAK Defeat To India
Wasim Akram has called for major changes to Pakistan’s line-up after their disappointing six-wicket defeat to India in Dubai to crash out of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy race. Moreover, the former Pakistan captain and legendary all-rounder also blamed active skipper Mohammad Rizwan for team’s latest debacle, and urged the selection committee to bring in “young and fearless cricketers” in a bid to start preparing for the 2026 T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka next year.
Perry’s 90* In Vain As Ecclestone Wins Historic Super Over For UPW
UP Warriorz upstaged defending champions RCB in a thrilling Super Over in match number nine of the WPL 2025 season. After RCB mounted 180-6 from 20 overs courtesy of Ellyse Perry’s sublime 90* and Danni Wyatt-Hodge’s sizzling 41-ball 57, the UP Warriorz faltered in their chase by slipping to 134-8 at one stage of the innings.
However, Sophie Ecclestone’s 33-run cameo, glittered with four huge sixes, helped the Warriorz level up with the RCB in a thrilling last over finish. Ecclestone also bowled a tight Super Over to restrict RCB openers Richa Ghosh and Smriti Mandhana in a chase of nine runs.
