Team India completed a six-wicket demolition of Pakistan in match five of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. The Indian win also coincided with several landmark moments, primarily headlined by Virat Kohli’s match-winning ton. Elsewhere, Zimbabwe sealed a clinical run-chase over Ireland in Harare.

Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Sunday, February 23.

India Wallop Pakistan By Six Wickets In Dubai

Team India pulverised Pakistan by six wickets in match number five of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in Dubai. Pakistan batted first and hauled 241 runs in 49.4 overs, with Saud Shakeel’s 62 emerging as the biggest benefactor of the innings. For India, Kuldeep Yadav picked up three wickets in the innings, while Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja chipped in with a wicket each. Hardik Pandya also got the prized-scalps of Babar Azam and Shakeel to bag figures of 2-31.

In response, Virat Kohli tonked his 51st ODI century with the winning hit in just 42.3 overs alongside unbeaten Axar Patel. Shreyas Iyer also contributed with a swift 56 as he shared a match-defining 114-run partnership with Kohli.

Virat Kohli Celebrates Indian Win With Landmark Day

Virat Kohli fittingly won the ‘Player of the Match’ award for cracking 100 unbeaten runs from just 111 balls with seven boundaries against Pakistan as India took charge of Group A of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. Through the course of his innings, Kohli also completed 14,000 runs in ODIs to become only the third cricketer in history, and the fastest among them all to scale the landmark figure.

Moreover, the legendary Indian batter also took a couple of catches on the field to extend his ODI tally to 158 catches. In doing so, he became the third most successful fielder in ODI history in terms of number of catches taken.

Kuldeep Yadav Scales 300, Hardik Pandya Completes 200 Wickets

Indian spinner Kuldeep Yadav picked up the prized scalps of Agha Salman, Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah to bag astonishing figures of 3-40 against Pakistan. In doing so, Kuldeep completed 300 wickets in his international career, and became only the tenth Indian cricketer in history to do so.

His bowling teammate and Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya also completed 200 wickets in international cricket through his match-winning spell of 2-31 against Pakistan in Dubai.

India Set An Embarrassing Toss Record

Team India set an embarrassing and unwanted record, despite defeating Pakistan in match five of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. Prior to the match, Indian captain Rohit Sharma lost the toss to his Pakistani counterpart Mohammad Rizwan. The setback marked India’s 12th consecutive toss loss in ODI cricket. The streak began with the final match of the 2023 ODI World Cup back in November 2023, where Australian skipper Pat Cummins had won the toss and opted to field first.

Since that match, Team India is yet to win a single toss in ODIs, losing 12 in a row to record most consecutive toss defeats in the format.

Gwandu, Munyonga Take Zimbabwe 1-0 Up Over Ireland

Zimbabwe took a 1-0 lead over the visiting Ireland team with a thrilling win in the second T20I of their three-match series at the Harare Sports Club. After bowlers Trevor Gwandu (3-24), Sikandar Raza (2-22) and Richard Ngarava (2-38) restricted Ireland to just 137-8 from 20 overs, middle-order batter Tony Munyonga steered Zimbabwe to a three-wicket win in the final over by cracking an unbeaten 43* from 30 balls. After the opening washout, the two teams will now collide in the series-deciding third T20I on February 25.
