The last clash of the Champions Trophy ended horribly as Pakistan faced a heartbreaking defeat against India. Despite having an impressive start, they lost the momentum, and that cost them the match.

After a dismal show by the ‘Men in Green,’ frustration erupted from fans to cricket experts. Former Pakistani legend Wasim Akram also fumed and demanded significant changes in the team and strategy.

Akram Asks For Significant Changes

Pakistan’s struggle is not new as the side has been facing troubles for the past few years. In the last clash against India, nothing really changed as they kept struggling despite having a good start. Even the star players were seen struggling and that daunting defeat put them backfoot in the semifinal stage. After that horrible show, Pakistani legend Wasim Akram demanded change in the team.

“Enough is enough. We are losing in white-ball with these players from some couple of years. The time is to take a bold step. What is the bold step?” Akram said.

“As Waqar Younis was saying, bring young players, fearless cricketers, bring them in white ball cricket. Even if you have to make 5-6 big changes, do that, lose for the next six months, support those players. Start making the 2026 T20 World Cup team from now.” he added.

Highlighting Consistent Bowling Failure

Pakistan used to known for its world-class bowling over the years now struggling in this unit the most. From leaking runs to failing in crunch moments, their bowling woes have persisted for years. In the last match, their lackluster performance handed the momentum straight to India. Wasim Akram asked for improvement, highlighting Pakistan’s growing struggles in the 50-over format.

“We have seen everything, we have given chances, created superstars. In the last five games, all Pakistani bowlers together have taken 24 wickets at an average of 60. The shocking stat is that among 14 teams including Oman and USA who have played ODI cricket this year, Pakistan’s blowing average is second worst among these teams.” he said.

Questions About Rizwan’s Ability

As Pakistan started their Champions Trophy campaign against New Zealand and before their last group stage match, they are still hunting for their first win and almost out of the semifinal race. Despite home conditions, Mohammad Rizwan and his squad struggled, with the skipper himself failing to find form or make key tactical calls. Wasim Akram takes a jab at the Pakistani skipper.

“The captain is also responsible. He is the captain of the ship and leader. If he doesn’t know which match winners he needs in his own conditions, if he is unable to read his own conditions then it’s embarrassing,” he said.

“There were around 8-10% Pakistani fans in the ground and they started leaving after Pakistan bowled 15-18 overs, I had not seen this in the history of Pakistan, this is unfortunate. We as a nation are very passionate…It’s frustrating.” Akram added with disappointment.

Pointing At The Selection Committee

Even before the Champions Trophy started, Pakistan’s squad selection became the talk of the town. From questionable openers to limited spin options, cricket legends criticized the squad selection. Following their crushing loss to India, the criticism only intensified, with Pakistani legend Wasim Akram openly questioning the selection committee’s decisions.

“PCB chairman has to call up the selection committee, call the captain, coach and our five legends and ask them what is this selection. Khushdil Shah and Salman Agha, did it look like they will get out someone, Virat Kohli types.” Akram said.

“This is the fact and we have to say it. We had been screaming that this squad was not good. Even the chairman asked them one day before that change the squad if there was a need. These guys met for one hour and came out with the same squad.” he added.

After the disappointing 6-wicket defeat against India, massive pressure mounted on the host. As they are set to face Bangladesh in their last group-stage match on February 27, they will try hard to end the tournament with a victory.
