Pakistan has been put on high alert over the possibility of a terrorist attack in the middle of hosting the ongoing 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. As per Pakistani intel, several extremist groups in the country are eying to kidnap foreigners attending the tournament.
It is worth noting that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) fought valiantly for years in a bid to secure the hosting rights of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, only to end up sharing the competition with the UAE owing to India’s travelling reluctance.
Pakistan on high alert with terrorist threat
According to reports, Pakistan’s Intelligence Bureau have issued a high alert to Pakistani security forces over the security of foreign guests attending the country for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
The report indicates that several extremist groups like Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and ISIS are planning to abduct visiting fans of other competing nations.
Notably, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) expressed its concerns last year regarding Team India’s security in Pakistan for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
Owing to the prevailing geopolitical tensions between the two nations, the BCCI eventually refused to send the Indian team to Pakistan, prompting the ICC and the PCB to allot India’s matches to the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in the UAE.
It is worth noting that the ongoing tournament marks the first ICC event to be hosted by Pakistan after a gap of 29 years.
Moreover, the cricket-crazy nation was also deprived of mainstream international cricket for a major part of the 2010 decade after the Sri Lankan team bus was attacked by terrorists back in 2009.
