The happiness of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and their millions of loyal fans turned into a scene of chaos and tragedy, when 11 people lost their lives in a stampede outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4. The incident occurred during public celebrations of RCB’s first-ever IPL title win, ending an 18-year-long wait for its supporters.
RCB, Event Management Officials Taken For Medical Tests
According to several reports, a roughly estimated crowd of over three lakh people had gathered near the stadium on Wednesday to celebrate the win. The situation went out of control as large groups tried to push their way into the stadium, resulting in a stampede-like scenario.
Karnataka Police have taken swift action, arresting officials associated with both RCB franchise and DNA Entertainment Networks, the event management company involved in organizing the celebration.
The individuals arrested include Sumanth, Kiran Kumar, and Sunil Mathew from DNA Entertainment, as well as Nikhil, a member of RCB's support staff. All four were taken for medical examinations on Friday (June 6) after being taken into custody.
FIRs Filed Against KSCA And RCB franchise
An FIR has been filed against several parties, including the KSCA, the RCB franchise, and the event management agency. In response, KSCA has filed a writ petition in the Karnataka High Court. KSCA President Raghuram Bhat, Secretary A Shankar, and Treasurer E S Jairam have strongly denied any direct role in the organization of the celebration event.
They argued that KSCA merely provided the venue and had no control over crowd logistics outside the stadium.
It is important to mention that while RCB’s title victory remains a milestone in IPL, the tragic events that followed have cast a long shadow over the celebrations.
