A week after securing the 'Captain Cool' trademark, MS Dhoni has suffered a huge blow as a New Delhi-based lawyer has now raised an objection. According to a report from Bar and Bench, the lawyer claims that the former India captain cannot trademark a generic phrase for himself.

“The term ‘Captain Cool’ is a generic, laudatory expression that has been used for multiple sportspeople. It cannot be monopolised by any individual, regardless of their fame or public persona,” read the notice, as quoted by Bar and Bench.

Why Did MS Dhoni File a Trademark?

In a move outside of the cricket world, MSD decided to trademark 'Captain Cool'—a moniker commonly associated with him for his calm demeanour during his playing days—for ventures like training centres, sports training, and coaching services.

The application has been accepted and advertised by the Trade Marks Registry Portal. The report further adds that the trademark was published in the official trademark journal on June 16, 2025.

Why Did the Lawyer Oppose?

The lawyer was not happy with the bench for granting trademark rights to MS Dhoni, as he deemed 'Captain Cool' to be a generic term used in day-to-day language. Further, the lawyer argued that it could start a chain of generic phrases getting trademarked, such as 'The Wall' by Rahul Dravid or 'God of Cricket' by Sachin Tendulkar.

The Delhi-based man also cited examples of other cricketers in his plea, stating that 'Captain Cool' is not a unique name and that even former Sri Lanka captain Arjuna Ranatunga was also referred to by the same moniker.

It is Dhoni's second setback in his attempt to get a trademark for 'Captain Cool', as he earlier had to fight a separate case because of an existing mark under the same name. The battle was long, but eventually, the trademark was successfully registered under MS Dhoni's name. However, with this latest objection, MS will have to fight another case in court.
