Virat Kohli might have walked away from the longest format but not everyone is ready to move on just yet. Former India selector and Delhi head coach Sarandeep Singh shared a hard-hitting reality check after Kohli’s Test retirement, stating how no one can fill the shoes of the two giants of Indian cricket: Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
Sarandeep Singh Explains Why Kohli And Rohit Are Irreplaceable
Speaking to ANI, Sarandeep laid it bare as he explained how losing Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma is a massive blow and India still doesn't have players who can match their impact in Test cricket.
“It will definitely affect them. I believe that we still don't have replacements for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. They are one of the greats. And they will remain greats. Let's see who takes their place. The match-winning players who used to play, who had the passion to win the match. Their 14 years of career is not a small thing. To play in all three formats. To play in a good position is commendable. Now, the responsibility will increase on the youngsters. Let's see who the player is who can take the captaincy,” he said.
The message is loud and clear. Kohli and Rohit aren’t just names on the team sheet. They are match-winners. Icons who carried Indian cricket on their shoulders through thick and thin.
Will The Youngsters Step Up To Fill The Void?
With Kohli’s official Test retirement coming yesterday, India’s red-ball unit now feels a little lighter and not in a good way. The Test setup suddenly looks thin on experience, especially when it comes to tackling English conditions.
Swinging dukes. Cloudy skies. Tricky tracks. Kohli had seen it all. And now, someone else has to step up. But that’s easier said than done. Sure, there are young guns in the wings.
But stepping into those shoes? That is a mountain to climb. The passion, the consistency, the hunger to win, all of it will be missed.
And now, the focus is going to swing onto the next generation. Who has got the stomach for long hauls, who is ready to carry the team in the toughest format of all? Only time will tell.
