In a significant development, Bangladesh star spinner and newly-appointed ODI captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz is doubtful for the upcoming first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, scheduled to begin on June 17. The 27-year-old might miss the inaugural match due to fever, as stated by the Bangladesh head coach Phil Simmons on June 15.
"Yes, Miraz has a fever but he looked comparatively better this morning than the previous days. He is receiving treatment and I hope he can train tomorrow," Simmons told the media today, as reported by the Daily Star.
The coach added that it would be a big loss if Miraz couldn’t play, but it would also be a chance for someone else to step up.
"Miraz's illness is concerning. If can't get well enough to play it will bring an opportunity for someone else. Everyone is hoping he recovers," he said.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz Missed The Team's First Practice Session
As per the reports, Miraz couldn’t attend the team’s first practice session in Galle due to his illness, as confirmed by team management. The Bangladesh team had landed in Galle on Saturday, ahead of their Test series.
His absence from training raised concerns because he’s expected to be a key bowler in Galle’s spin-friendly conditions. Right now, it’s unclear if the team’s vice-captain will be fit in time for the match.
It is worth mentioning that just a few days ago, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced Mehidy as the new ODI captain for the next 12 months, replacing Najmul Hossain Shanto. This decision came just weeks before the ODI series against Sri Lanka, which also starts on July 2.
Notably, Bangladesh’s two-match Test series against Sri Lanka is part of the new World Test Championship cycle. This is also an all-format tour, where Bangladesh will play two Tests, three ODIs, and three T20Is. The action begins with the first Test this Tuesday.
