South Africa finally ended their 27-year-long wait for an ICC trophy by winning the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 Final. They defeated the mighty Australian team by 5 wickets at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground.
It was a historic win, and the team pulled off one of the most memorable run-chases ever seen in ICC tournament history. The star of the match was none other than Aiden Markram, who smashed a brilliant century under pressure and led the Proteas to a famous victory.
SA needed 282 runs to win in their final innings. They reached the target with five wickets to spare, thanks to Markram’s incredible knock of 136 runs. He was dismissed just six runs before victory, but by then, he had already done the job.
This win not only gave South Africa their first-ever WTC title but also broke a 14-year-old world record that was previously held by India.

In reply, South Africa struggled. Pat Cummins was on fire and took six wickets, becoming the first bowler to achieve such a feat in an ICC final. South Africa were bowled out for just 138, giving Australia a 74-run lead.
In their second innings, Australia once again lost early wickets and were reduced to 77/7. However, Mitchell Starc scored a gutsy half-century to help Australia set a target of 282 runs.
South Africa’s final innings was a masterclass in composure and resilience. Aiden Markram led the chase with a magnificent 136, while captain Temba Bavuma contributed 66. Together, they made sure South Africa crossed the line and lifted their first ICC trophy in 27 years.
