India are all set to start afresh in Test cricket as Shubman Gill gets ready to lead India after the retirement of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. The decision to leave the format just before an important series in England has surprised quite a few fans and cricket pundits.

Now, Yograj Singh in an exclusive interview with InsideSport has also opened up about the retirement of two greats. The former Indian cricketer mentioned that both players were capable of playing five more years of Test cricket and should have continued.

The celebrated father of Yuvraj Singh also blamed both the seniors for not passing the baton smoothly to Shubman Gill. He also cited an example of Sourav Ganguly and how he balanced the team with seniors and youngsters.

Yograj Singh Credits Yuvraj Singh For Shubman Gill's Success

Yograj Singh who has rated Shubman Gill highly in the past stated that the player is lucky to have a mentor like Yuvraj Singh who is always behind him and helps him in all situations. Yuvraj Singh has been associated with Shubman Gill since his junior cricket days and has played a big role in his development.

“Virat and Rohit can still play for another 5 years in Test cricket. They should have played. They should be there to see that the baton is passed to the youngsters. What Sourav Ganguly did: nine senior players and six youngsters. The baton has not been passed; it has been thrown to Gill. He is a great player and he’s lucky to have Yuvraj Singh as his mentor. To have a tiger and a lion behind you, he will tell you all the time what to do."

Shubman Gill has led India in T20 in past and also has captained Gujarat Titans in IPL. However, he has no prior experience of leading in Test cricket and has a tough first assignment ahead of him. The first Test will start on June 20 at Headingley, Leeds and it is the first game of the new WTC cycle for India.
