Bangladesh has faced a massive blow ahead of the third ODI against Afghanistan, as their skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto has been ruled out of the crucial and final ODI due to groin injury. In a recent announcement by BCB on Monday (November 11), chief selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu officially announced Shanto's unavailability for the series decider.
"Shanto won't play in the third ODI due to injury," chief selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu told The Daily Star.
Big Blow For Bangladesh Najmul Shanto To Miss 3rd ODI
According to the reports of the Daily Star, Najmul Hossain Shanto will miss the match due to an injury he faced while fielding during the second ODI on Saturday. After the injury, the Bangladesh captain left the field and could not continue and subsequent scans confirmed that the injury would not heal in time for him to participate in the series decider today.
It is worth mentioning that the 26-year-old left-handed batter played a significant role in Bangladesh's 68-run win in the second ODI. He made a valuable contribution with the bat and scored a resilient 76 runs.
Bangladesh, who were already dealing with injury concerns, now face additional challenges. Veteran wicketkeeper-batter Mushfiqur Rahim was previously ruled out of the series after sustaining a finger injury in the first ODI.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz Likely To Lead In Final Match
It is important to note that, in Shanto's unavailability, all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz is likely to step in as captain for the series decider. Additionally, wicketkeeper-batter Zakir Hasan is expected to be brought into the playing XI as Shanto’s replacement. Zakir, who has been waiting in the wings, will look to make an impact in what could be a high-pressure match.
With the third ODI set to be a high-stakes encounter, and the series levelling at 1-1, Afghanistan will be eager to capitalise on Bangladesh’s injury troubles and secure a series win.
