Nahida Akter became the first Bangladesh woman to claim 100 wickets in T20Internationals. The left-arm spinner's milestone wicket came in Bangladesh’s 16-run victory over Scotland in their Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 opener in Sharjah, a win that marks Bangladesh’s first win away from home in T20 World Cups.

Nahida Akter's 100th T20I Wicket Powered Bangladesh to Victory

Nahida Akter, just 24, joined the elite club of T20I bowlers with a century of wickets in her 88th appearance, making her the second-youngest woman to achieve this remarkable feat, only behind Rwanda's Henriette Ishimwe.

Her final wicket sealed the game, leaving Scotland short of their target and ensuring a winning start for Bangladesh in the tournament.

But this isn’t Nahida’s first brush with glory. Last November, she made headlines by becoming the first Bangladeshi player to win the ICC Women's Player of the Month award. Her consistent brilliance with the ball continues to be the backbone of Bangladesh’s bowling attack, a role she’s embraced with aplomb.

BAN vs SCO: Bangladesh's Battling Innings

Bangladesh won the toss and opted to bat first, looking to put Scotland under pressure from the get-go. Openers Shathi Rani and Sobhana Mostary gave Bangladesh a solid start, with Rani swinging her bat freely, contributing a vital 29 runs at the top. Sobhana, however, anchored the innings with a steady 36 off 38 balls, rotating the strike and holding the fort during the middle overs.

Despite their solid start, Bangladesh's momentum was checked post the powerplay. Scotland's captain Kathryn Bryce led her team’s resurgence, while Saskia Horley stole the show with an impressive 3/13, ensuring that Bangladesh could only post 119/7 on the board. With 120 runs required, Scotland was chasing history – a chance to register their first-ever T20 World Cup victory.

BAN vs SCO: A Spin Masterclass in Defense

Scotland’s chase got off to a rocky start as Bangladesh’s bowlers, led by Nahida Akter and Ritu Moni, tightened the screws inside the powerplay. The pressure mounted, and by the end of the powerplay, Scotland had lost two wickets, including their captain Kathryn Bryce. The visitors were soon caught between a rock and a hard place with the required rate climbing steadily.

While Sarah Jennifer Bryce fought valiantly, remaining unbeaten on 49, Scotland’s batters struggled to find the boundary. Nahida Akter, in her trademark fashion, bowled with precision, turning the screws tighter with every delivery. Ritu Moni (2/15) provided the perfect foil for Nahida, chipping away at Scotland’s middle order.

In the end, it was fitting that Nahida Akter, the shining star of Bangladesh cricket, took the final wicket to achieve her historic milestone and secure the win for her team
