In a major setback, fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman has been ruled out of the upcoming T20I series against Pakistan due to a thumb injury sustained during his last match in IPL. Khaled Ahmed is announced as his replacement and has been called up for the series, which will begin on May 28 in Lahore.
Mustafizur Rahman’s Injury Blow
Mustafizur Rahman was struck on his left thumb while attempting a caught and bowled off Josh Inglis during the match between DC and PBKS on May 24. The impact caused a clip fracture, which will require a period of rest and rehabilitation. According to Bangladesh team physio, Delowar Hossain, the injury will take up to three weeks to heal.
"Mustafizur suffered a clip fracture on his left thumb while playing his last match of the Indian Premier League yesterday," Hossain said. "This injury requires a period of rest and rehabilitation. As per our current assessment, he will be unavailable for selection for the next two to three weeks. We will conduct a follow-up evaluation after two weeks to monitor his recovery progress."
Khaled Ahmed To Take Mustafizur’s Place
With Fizz unavailable, Khaled Ahmed has been named as his replacement for the T20I series. Khaled is a right-arm fast bowler, has had a stellar season in 2024-25, making a strong case for his inclusion in the squad. He has taken 77 wickets at an average of 21.74 in all formats. Khaled’s standout performance came in the recent BPL, where he claimed 20 wickets at an average of 21.55.
Bangladesh Other Injury Concerns
It is important to note that Rahman is the third player to be unavailable for the series. Nahid Rana has withdrawn from the squad for personal reasons, while Soumya Sarkar has been sidelined due to a back injury. Sarkar’s injury has seen Mehidy Hasan Miraz called up as his replacement.
The multiple injuries and absences have left Bangladesh with limited resources as they prepare for a high-stakes T20I series against Pakistan. The T20I series between Bangladesh and Pakistan will take place in Lahore on May 28, May 30, and June 1.
