Former Indian spinner Piyush Chawla has announced his retirement from professional cricket. Having made his international debut for Team India back in March 2006 as a teenager, the wily leg-spinner recently played a couple of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024-25 fixtures for Uttar Pradesh, picking up match-winning figures of 4-12 in the final match of his competitive career back in November 2024.
Apart from holding an illustrious first-class and List A record, Chawla also boasts of some staggering numbers in Indian Premier League (IPL). In an extraordinary career spanning 16 different seasons for four different franchises, the leg-spinner is concluding his IPL journey as one of the league’s most successful bowlers of all time, in terms of number of wickets. Piyush Chawla made his IPL debut back during the inaugural edition in 2008 for the Kings XI Punjab franchise (now Punjab Kings). Up until the 2024 season for Mumbai Indians, the cricketer played 192 matches for four different franchises, and was part of a title-winning unit in 2014 for the KKR.

As per the aforementioned stats, Piyush Chawla is ranked fourth among the most successful bowlers in IPL history. Moreover, he is the third most successful spin bowler, after the likes of Yuzvendra Chahal and Sunil Narine in terms of number of wickets.
Notably, Chawla was the second highest wicket-taker in IPL prior to the launch of the 2025 edition earlier this year. However, his absence from the tournament prompted Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Narine to surpass him in the wickets tally.
