India’s premier off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has added another remarkable achievement to his illustrious cricketing career by equalling Sri Lankan legend Muttiah Muralitharan’s record of the most Player of the Series awards in Test cricket.
Ashwin secured his 11th Player of the Series accolade following the recently concluded two-match Test series between India and Bangladesh. What sets Ashwin apart is the rate at which he has achieved this milestone. While Muralitharan won his 11 Player of the series awards over 60 series. Ashwin matched the record in just 39 series.
Ashwin's All-Rounder Performance In India Vs Bangladesh
Ashwin all-round contributions were crucial in India’s comprehensive series victory. Across the two Tests, Ashwin scored 114 runs and claimed 11 wickets, that demonstrated his unparalleled ability to impact the game in multiple departments.
While he remained wicketless in the first innings of the opening Test in Chennai, he bounced back in the second innings with a match-winning performance, as he scalped six wickets for 88 runs.
In the second Test at Green Park Stadium, Kanpur, Ashwin continued his dominance by picking up five wickets—two in the first innings and three in the second.
Ashwin’s contributions extended beyond his prowess with the ball. His critical batting efforts during the series played a crucial role in India’s dominance.
In the first innings of the opening Test, Ashwin came out to bat at No. 8 and delivered a stunning knock of 113 from 133 balls. His partnership of 199 runs for the seventh wicket with Ravindra Jadeja was a turning point, helping India recover from a precarious position of 144/6 to post a commanding total of 376.
