The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has honoured two of the modern era’s most decorated players, Moeen Ali (England) and Meg Lanning (Australia), with Honorary Life Membership, a rare distinction reserved for cricketing icons.
The announcement comes as Lord’s gears up for its 2025 international fixtures. Amidst the WTC final, Lord's celebrates the duo’s extraordinary contributions to the sport.
Ali and Lanning Join Exclusive List of Life Members!
Moeen Ali, England’s celebrated all-rounder who retired from international cricket in 2023, left an indelible mark across all formats of the game. With 6,678 runs and 366 wickets in 68 Tests, 138 ODIs, and 92 T20Is, Moeen played a key role in England’s Ashes victories and was a vital member of the squads that lifted both the T20 and ODI World Cup trophies.
“It’s a tremendous honour to be awarded Honorary Life Membership of MCC. To be listed alongside so many cricketing greats is truly humbling. I’m really thankful to the Club for this, as being made an HLM is very special. I always enjoyed playing at Lord’s and it was an incredible feeling to walk out at such a historic venue,” Moeen said, as quoted by Lord's official release.
Meg Lanning, Australia’s legendary captain who retired in late 2023, redefined leadership and dominance in women’s cricket. Known as the “World Cup Queen,” Lanning led her team to five major titles — four T20 World Cups, one ODI World Cup, and a Commonwealth Games gold medal — making her one of the most successful captains in the sport’s history.
“I’m thrilled to be awarded Honorary Life Membership of MCC, becoming part of a prestigious Club and following in the footsteps of a long line of fantastic cricketers, both from Australia and around the world. It is a huge privilege, as it always has been to play at Lord’s both internationally and domestically, and I am honoured to accept the invitation,” Lanning remarked.
MCC Happy To Honour Legends!
Claire Taylor, MCC Cricket Committee Chair, hailed the trio, “These legends embody excellence. Their impact on cricket, on and off the field, makes them worthy additions to MCC’s storied legacy.”
Notably, the duo follows Sir James Anderson, knighted earlier this year, who received his MCC Life Membership during his emotional Lord’s farewell Test in July 2024. Anderson’s 704 Test wickets, a record for pace bowlers, cemented his status among cricket’s immortals.
