In a significant turn of events, former Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza will face legal trouble as former chairman of BPL franchise Sylhet Strikers has filed an extortion case on the pacer. Mashrafe Mortaza, a revered figure in Bangladesh cricket, has also served as a lawmaker and has been an influential voice in both sports and politics. He made his international debut in 2001 as a fast bowler and quickly rose to fame.

In addition to his cricketing career, Mashrafe entered politics. In 2018, he was elected as a Member of Parliament from Narail-2 constituency under the Bangladesh Awami League banner.

However, amid political unrest in the country, Mashrafe Mortaza has landed in huge legal trouble.  An FIR has been filed against him, along with six others, for their alleged involvement in extortion and the forced share transfer of the BPL cricket team, Sylhet Strikers.

The case was lodged by Sarowar Golam Chowdhury, a US-based former chairman of the Sylhet Strikers, at the Pallabi Police Station in Dhaka.

Inspector Adil Hossain confirmed the filing of the case and noted that no arrests have been made so far. According to the police, an investigation into the allegations has been initiated to determine the veracity of the charges.

Previously, Mortaza and his dad were booked for assaulting student protesters during the anti-discrimination movement.

Protesters burn down Mashrafe Mortaza’s house amid political turmoil

In disturbing visuals, a social media post claimed that Bangladesh student protesters set MP and former Bangladesh cricket captain Mashrafe Mortaza’s house on fire.

He was a member of the former PM Sheikh Hasina-led political party and fought the 2024 general elections from the Narail-2 constituency in the Khulna Division. While the student protests have settled down once PM Sheikh Hasina fled the country, Mortaza’s troubles are unlikely to subside soon.
