Madushanka Goes Past Shaheen Afridi To Become Leading Wicket-Taker With Stylish 5-Fer Vs India

Sri Lanka’s in-form speedster Dilshan Madushanka scalped Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav and Shreyas Iyer all within an afternoon to soar past Shaheen Afridi as the leading wicket-taker of the 2023 World Cup.

The bowling prodigy stunned a capacity Wankhede crowd in Mumbai by dismissing Sharma within the opening over of the match, before returning to curtail well-set Kohli and Gill from registering their respective centuries. The youngster eventually finished with figures of 5-80 in the high-scoring Indian innings.


Dilshan Madushanka climbs to the top of the table

Dilshan Madushanka claimed two wickets each against South Africa and Pakistan, albeit in expensive spells as Sri Lanka endured a torrid start to their World Cup 2023 campaign. Thereafter, the speedster jolted Australia and Netherlands in successive games as Sri Lanka ended up registering their opening set of two points through his four-fer against the Dutchmen.

The 23-year-old finished with 2-48 against Afghanistan, and accounted for four of India’s first five wickets at the Wankhede Stadium to catapult his World Cup 2023 tally to 18 wickets, i.e., just above Australian spinner Adam Zampa, Pakistan pace maverick Shaheen Afridi and South African youngster Marco Jansen.

Zampa, Shaheen and Jansen all occupy a spot among the top five wicket-takers of the tournament with 16 scalps each, while Madushanka is comfortably placed at the top with 18 wickets to his name.

His latest set of World Cup 2023 victims includes a star-studded bunch of Indian batters like Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma, Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav.

So far, Madushanka has pocketed two four-wicket hauls in the tournament, including a five-fer, and has maintained a bowling strike rate of an impressive 20.00.
