Sri Lankan speedster Dilshan Madushanka got his side an early breakthrough against South Africa in their opening World Cup 2023 match in Delhi. The left-arm pacer trapped South African opener and captain Temba Bavuma within his opening over of the innings, thus flagging an early way for number three Rassie van der Dussen into the crease.

South Africa receive early setback with Bavuma’s entrapment

South Africa’s in-form opening batsman Temba Bavuma punched out two majestic boundaries upfront to signal a blazing start for his side within the powerplay. However, just as Bavuma raced to eight from just four balls, he was struck on his front pad over the knee roll by Sri Lanka’s new-ball pacer Dilshan Madushanka in the second over of the match.

Mudushanka’s appeal for a leg-before was upheld by on-field umpire Sharfuddoula, and the call was instantly taken upstairs by the Proteas skipper. As it turned out, television replays indicated that the ball was pitching just in line and would have hit the top of middle.

Bavuma eventually made his way back to the pavilion, all while wasting up a review for his side.

Following Temba Bavuma’s dismissal, his opening partner Quinton de Kock and number three Rassie van der Dussen kept the scoreboard ticking with counterattacking stroke-play, taking South Africa to 48-1 by the end of their first 10 powerplay overs.

Prior to the game, the South Africans were invited to bat first after Sri Lankan skipper Dasun Shanaka had won the toss. The match between the two white-ball titans at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi marks the opening fixture for both sides this tournament.
